Extremism in law and white settler society, huh. Wait until y’all hear about federal Indian laws and SCOTUS decisions, or how this country was founded by genociding Indian tribes (who are still here by the way). The discourse around far-right movements, extremism, and terrorism by “experts” fundamentally overlook the mainstream western extremism that serves as the bedrock of a settler colonial state (the U.S. if you didn’t know). Extremism and authoritarianism has always been an antagonist for Indigenous peoples engaging in Indian-settler relations, from history all the way through today’s US governance. Governments and movements who force tribes to cede their lands to a settler state, force tribes to stop practicing their religions and speaking their languages, take Native children from their families to be re-educated in Indian Boarding Schools, further land grabs in federal laws, terminating tribal status. All of these laws are meant to eradicate tribal social cohesion, destroy Native cultures, upend their identities while stealing the natural resources on their homelands. None of this history is considered extremist in today’s discourse, nor the legacies of presidential, congressional, and Supreme Court actions considered extremist, much less fascistic or totalitarian. But the European ideologies of the Papal Bull decrees of heathen lands, Doctrine of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, Zionism, and Lebensraum all fueled these settler movements that eventually conquered countless Indigenous nations, usurped their lands and resources, and erected authoritarian white-ruled democratic governments.
